Channeled Whelk Habitat!
Channeled Whelk Habitat!
The Channeled Whelk lives in the Aquatic Biome. It's preferred habitat consists of sandy, muddy, low tide areas such as the shore of a beach. Channeled Whelks are particularly found along the edge of the east coast. They are very commonly found in the Narraganset Bay in Rhode Island. Channeled Whelk's are carnivores, but do have several predators such as the Blue crab.
Tropic Level!
In terms of tropic levels, Channeled Whelks are secondary consumers. This is because they eat other organisms such as bivalves, but are eaten by species like the Blue Crab.
Intraspecific/Interspecific Interactions!
Intraspecific: Channeled Whelks do not often interact with the other members of their species. When Whelks are born, as babies they immediately compete with each other for food. Some newborns even eat their unborn siblings. But when they hatch they are completely on their own and do not receive any parental care. Interspecific: Channeled Whelks also barely interact with other species. The Blue Crab prays on Whelks, and Whelks prey on oysters and clams. Many Channeled Whelks compete with the Rappa Whelk, since it has since it has been newly introduced to the east coast. The Channeled Whelk and the Rappa Whelk eat the same things, but the Rappa Whelk has a stronger shell and better defense mechanisms than the Channeled Whelk.
